Forget all the talk that Al Davis "doesn't draft quarterbacks in the 1st round" (He has, by the way), the Raiders made it pretty clear to me that they plan to make the 1st pick in the NFL Draft a quarterback. How else would you explain the Raiders starting Brooks in a meaningless season finale, and benching "the quarterback of the future" Andrew Walter twice this season for a guy that will probably be playing elsewhere next season.
One has to wonder why the Raiders would not have wanted to get a better look at Walter. The obvious thought would be that the coaching staff has lost their confidence that he can one day lead this team. The games that Brooks played in were beyond meaningless, and Brooks wasn't playing any better than Walter. Couple that with the fact that Brooks will probably not be here next season, and it just makes one wonder.
Now it is not etched in stone that the Raiders will draft a quarterback. They could look to upgrade the position through free agency. Matt Schaub, a restricted free agent from Atlanta, is considered the best possibility.
Either way, it looks like Walter will get the Tuiasosopo treatment and find himself with a rather permanent spot on the bench. Unless Shell feels that evaluating a young quarterback during game time situations is unimportant, and that the team will give Walter another look in the off season.
